Hamburg Real Estate, Brighton Homes for Sale

Hamburg is the name of both a township and an unincorporated city in the township. Both the town ship and the city are located in Livingston County, Michigan. Hamburg is a civil township and the largest municipality in Livingston County. The township motto is “A Great Place to Grow” and other communities in the township include Pickney, Lakeland and more. The township is nestled in a solidly upper-middle class portion of the state economically speaking and the unincorporated city has grown into a warm and peaceful community. Most homes are owner-occupied and there is a high rate of home-ownership giving the community a stability that is uncommon. It has low crime rates, peaceful streets and good schools making it perfect for singles, couples and families.

The city had its start in 1835, when E.F. Gay bought thirty acres of land and constructed a dam and established a sawmill. In 1837, Gay sold the land to three German men, the Messrs. Grisson. These men added a grist mill, hotel and store and a village soon grew up around them. The town was platted in 1837 and named Hamburg by the Messrs. Grisson in honor of their hometown in Germany. Growth for the town and the township was slow over the years and it has largely retained its rural nature.

Today the township of Hamburg spans 36 square miles of predominantly land area. However, it does feature 3.6 square miles of water area made up of a large number of lakes and waterways. In 2000, the median household income in the township was $75,960, the median family income was $81,351 and the per capita income was $30,283.  In 2010, the population of the township was 21,163 and the population density was 636.9 people per square mile.

The township is nestled in a wet area and features around 32 named lakes and countless ponds, creeks and marches. It i also home to several parks and recreational sites/opportunities. For example, both East and West Bennett Park are in the township and feature fields for football, softball, soccer and more. A large portion of Brighton State Recreational Area is within the township. The recreational area features a boat launch, swimming areas, barbecue facilities, picnic and camping areas and so much more. The Lakeland Trails, is an asphalt trail that runs parallel to a major highway. It is perfect for walking, jogging or biking, but motorized vehicles are strictly prohibited for the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.

The township has a number of open green spaces, a practice that became popular in residential areas during the 1990s. Homes for sale in the township and the unincorporated city are predominantly traditional single family homes which come in a variety of ages, sizes and styles. There are a few mobile homes available, but apartments are rare. Real estate options like townhomes and condominiums are virtually unheard of within the community.
